With the size and number of bait balls we've been seeing, it got me thinking (I have this problem...). Has anyone ever spent some time over a bait ball with a Sabiki rig or similar to catch a bucket of Alewife to use for bait? Maybe cure them for meat rigs? Fish "live" under a drifting boat?

I know that guys will buy frozen herring fillets for meat rigs, but these would be "free".

Yeah, there are lots of strategies that bring fish into the boat right now and live bait might be too much of a hassle, but humor me.

Yes to all of the above. If you want to freeze them, put them on cookie sheets lined with wax paper and arrange them in a single layer so they aren’t all stuck together. You can also store. Them in pickle jars in the fridge in brine.
