I was on the water at 630am today and saw now steelhead action from boat or the pier. Only one steelhead caught from the pier today and it was very early. I caught a 5 lb channel cat on an orange and gold J11 then went 5 for 5 on giant drum on the north side of the break wall. One on an orange and silver Little Cleo and 4 on an orange and gold J11 trolling 2.5mph, 15 feet deep. I know it is nothing to brag about but there was a lot of nothing going on at the pier and I think those guys would have paid cash money to hook up on anything today. It was a lot of fun and and it gave me a change to give my trolling rods a work out after ditching the braid and going back to good old mono. Everything worked perfectly and the goo fish were no match for my gear. I think I'm ready to boat a king lol. Thanks everyone for the great advice a few weeks ago and helping me figure out an answer to my "Reel Problems"

Honestly, I think I'd rather catch 5 big drum than 1 steelhead, especially trolling out of a kayak. Those drum pull hard. Especially on spinning tackle they are a blast

The gap between the lighthouse and the detached breakwater can be absolutely loaded sometimes and it's pretty fun dealing with a doubleheader on drum every time you go through that stretch

I agree, they were a ton of fun. I have caught some big ones in that stretch a few weeks ago. I have never had two on at one time, I bet that is brutal. Thanks!
