Just started salmon fishing last year with a buddy out of postage caught a bunch of coho had a blast was a observer at the classic and in st Joe I was hooked!!!!!! Bought a boat getting it set up went out Saturday no down diggers yet ran three dipsey in 90 fow with spoons marked some fish I think they were Lakers on the bottom no takers. Another buddy went 15-21 Saturday in 40 fow. I went out this morning lines in at 6:30 fished 40 fow ran two dipsey and some body baits with keel weights nothing. I will get some down diggers and I will put a king in my boat. Still got a whole bunch to learn and have learned a lot from this site thanks.Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the report! I fish predominantly out of New Buffalo also. Nice to have a few more reports out of there.

If you have line counter reels a cheaper option is 8oz torpedo weights. I use them all the time and they will allow you to get down to the depth they're holding without down riggers. I just put my line out about 75 feet attach the torpedo weight to my line zero my line counter then drop it to my desired depth, easy peasy. I have caught hundreds of fish salmon, trout, pike, musky, wipers, walleye, crappie and even largemouth bass. They cost about $25 each and can be found on line. you can also type in torpedo weights on youtube and see them in action. One of the keys to catching any fish is getting it in the strike zone and the torpedo weights will get the job done. Your over the biggest hurdle getting out there and trying, try different baits till you find what they like that day then it will be FISH ON! good luck.

Fished on a buddies boat Saturday out of new buff. Set up in 60ish fow. Trolled out deeper hit a hand full of lakers on various cracks baits flat lined between 80 and 90 . Hit a king on a wiggle wart back 140 in 90fow. Lost it. Hit another king on DR on the slider . Landed that one. Pretty slow day picking away at lakers. Lost a few fish and lander a hand full. But better than working!
