Did a little motor testing and trolled for steelhead for a couple hours in front of the ditch with orange mag spoons and such without a fish.  Did get a hit on a board, but unlikely it was a steelhead the way it dragged back.  Not many boats out, but would have liked to make the run offshore with the solid weather.  Unfortunately time and engine risk held us back.  Didn’t hear a whole lot on the radio.  Not much longer here and they will be running....

Thank you for the report. I am looking forward to getting out for some Skams soon. Weather lately has been unpleasant for getting out on the lake.

When do the steelhead start coming in close usually and what depth water do you usually find them in?

There's no set schedule. I've had great days in early June and others in late July. Depends on water temperature and the instincts of the fish. I've caught 'em in 10 feet and 50 feet.  About the only sure thing is most days a lure with a fluorescent red finish will score.

I’ve had multiple fish days in August from the riverwalk in Portage.  The past few years I feel like the run has been earlier than anticipated so I wanted to be on the early side of it.

Better load up on deet and orange spinners because the majority of the fish are most likely going to shoot straight up the creeks with this rain. If it weren’t for the crowds, trash, poison ivy, mosquitoes, incessant highway noise, and stink of all the dead fish, it’s a fun time.

Thanks for the report!
Be careful going out on the big lake with engine problems, and make sure you have TowBoatUS towing insurance!
