TOPIC:

Launched at portage at 5:20am and headed to Gary light. We were the first boat at the light house area and setup a west troll by the big gap in the metal wall. No fish along the break wall but once we got closer to the light house it was insane action. We went 15/24 and had 3 big fish lost due to breaking the line (I’ve never experienced that many break offs. Newer line and freshly cut/re-tied ball swivels). I ran an 8 rod spread with 6 planers and 2 dipseys. Smaller fish were caught on the dipseys and the boards pulled all the big fish. We would have had our 3 man limit by 7:30 but it was nothing but problems coordinating our spread.  Ended up putting the last fish on the box at 9:15 and called it a day. Targeted the top 15’ of water column, lake temp was 45 degrees, and SOG was 2.7mph on average.  Lots of big fish today and the King came on an orange bay rat crank bait. Lost a really nice steelhead who put on an amazing show of acrobatics before pulling the board to the depths and breaking us off. An hour later I found the board floating along the lighthouse wall. Cold, but perfect morning on the big lake today. Minimal boats out today and hopefully the fishing just continues to get better.  Good luck to everyone next weekend fishing the cabin fever outing. I’ll be chasing eyes on Lake Erie and won’t be able to attend this year. Tight lines!
