Some of you may have seen this other places, but I wanted to get it out to as many places as possible. Dave Warner, who works for USGS and performs the acoustic baitfish surveys, has been requesting anglers send information on their bait observations to him. Instructions are on the map

Basically all you do is take a picture of a bait ball on your sonar, and email it to him, and include the date, bottom depth, and lat/long coordinates

He's hoping it will capture knowledge and help improve the acoustic trawling methods

I have stickied this. It can only help our cause if we all report any chance we get.

Also, Dave emailed me and said he had only about 10 data points so far. That is frankly pathetic based on how many forums this has been posted on (not singling out this one, as it's probably responsible for half of them). But PLEASE send him your info. With how many anglers loudly complain that they see bait and the managing agencies need to listen to them - this is the time to put up or shut up!

Remember that you need a picture of the bait ball on your screen AND the data and GPS coordinates

Oops, sorry - I forgot to update this thread. I thought I had, but it must have been on Facebook.

So, Dave Warner's project got shut down temporarily due to federal govt red tape. Something called the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995. Basically he can't collect data from more than 10 members of the public without approval by the Office of Management and Budget in Washington DC.

He is working to gain approval and hopes to get this project up and running (and hopefully with more angler participation!) for next fishing season
