New to owning a Fish Hawk. Just curious about the speed variation between the probe and mounted on the transom paddle wheel. If the probe is just below the surface they should be reading the same or close to it right?

yes, as long as your transom is not affecting the paddle on the transducer.

I can tell you that on my boat the speed at the surface for the fish hawk does not work. It is bc of where it is mounted but to be honest speed at the surface is no longer something we look at anymore. You can tell the direction of the current by looking at your rigger cable.

So if you want 2.5 you go strictly off fish hawk at the ball? it doesn't matter if your doing 3.4 on the surface? Sunday and Monday of Memorial Day weekend was my first 2 trips on new boat with fish hawk out in 110 fow and it just seemed like we were running a little hot. We were doing 3.0 - 3.2 on surface to get 2.4 at the ball.

I don't own a fish hawk yet but its on the christmas list. I would imagine a week of west winds then a switch to say south east winds would change the currents on the surface but down under would still have a west to east momentum. That would probably be a good reason not to worry about surface speeds but focus on what the ball speed is.

Yes you are correct I go off the fish hawk. Sounds like you were going with the current. I have found since I have been running with the fish hawk I can catch fish more consistently no matter what direction I am trolling. Before for example a north troll would be on fire and the south would be dead. I do not notice that as much anymore. When you are trolling with the current your speed over ground will increase to keep the same bait action.
