got a planer mast and big boards set up this year. first time out running them we weren't totally happy with the set up we had. and the way we did have it actually ended up putting one rod and reel at the bottom of the lake! so we decided that we needed to come up with something better. I was planning on eventually just buying two big jon triple tree holders to match everything else on the boat, but really did not want to spend almost 800 dollars buying them. so we sat in the boat staring at it and thinking for a while and came up with a good enough idea to try and build them. 1 1/4 galvanized fittings and pipe is what we ended up using because it was cheaper than doing them in black pipe. we were able to find everything at menards. each one cost about 40 dollars for all the nipples and fittings. only thing left to do is throw some power coat on them to clean them up but 80 bucks is a lot better than 700 something, and they work just fine. really happy with the set up now and the extra money in the pocket. figured I would throw it up here and maybe save someone else some money too. tight lines fellas!!!

How has this held up over the last year? Is it still working out or have you changed over to a purchased setup? I'm thinking about a similar build this weekend if it's still working out for you.

Have you ever had a fish strike that caused your threaded fittings to spin loose slightly? Or do you have them pinned together or loctight on the threads to keep everything in the exact place you want them? I'm just wondering in a fish could loosen the threads slightly if the rod is in one of the holders on the starboard side since the pressure could pull the pipe to the left.

Great idea. I'm considering putting something like this together to get me going this Spring.

Never had anything like that happen sesshoku, Got um snugged up pretty tight, no loctight on them tho cause its nice to be able to adjust the two planner rod holders on each side while your out there. We've put a lot of fish in the boat with them over the last few seasons. Think we may upgrade still to the real thing from big jon one of these days but this little idea we had has worked out great for the in between time till the money is there to blow on the boat. lol
