Looking to buy a handful of leadcore rod's this year. I've done a bunch of looking on the internet and have seen guys suggest (for different reasons) anything from 5-6' leadcore rods to 9-10' dipsy rods. I am looking to set-up 6 rods total with the possibility of adding more later. I've been planning on setting up 2 - 7 color, 2 - 5 color and 2 - 3 color. I'd like to be able to run any combination off boards on either side of the boat. That being said, I'm leaning towards a dipsy or downrigger rod in the 8-9' range. Would any of you suggest a particular brand? Any suggestions on rod lengths/action/line weight? While I'd love to buy all Shimano Talora's, I think I'll need to keep it a little more practical as a weekend warrior in the $30-60 range per rod. Any tip's or suggestions are appreciated, I'll be pairing the rods up with Okuma Convectors 45's if that makes any difference. Thanks, Nick
I have Okuma rods and so far they have been fine. I have the GLT copper/leadcore rods and they have hardened chrome stainless eyes that will hold up to either line. They are about $40 per. I have 4 leadcore set ups also on some regular 8'6" GLT med action downrigger rods. They have ceramic eyes and since they are trolled with and not casted the inserts stay put They are a much cheaper option. I think Raven might have a few left. He was selling them pretty cheap. Give him a pm to see. The dipsey rods are as stiff as a pool cue and take some of the fun out of a fish fight. I have 2 of those to handle mag dipsies. They are 9 footers I think. I wished I did not get them as the medium actions are stiff enough to handle a big dipsy.
My Searunner 190, "Four "D's" and a "C". Retirement money well spent.
