I was off the north wall of the Port of Indiana a couple days ago in about 2 foot waves, trolling along, telling Genie jokes to my customers when we heard a dull thump and the boat shifted to port a few inches very quickly. We all looked at each other, then around. Long and short there was a giant tire, like off a pay-loader or other heavy equipment floating in the lake. In a calm lake, maybe the a foot of it would have been floating above the waves. In those sea conditions it would be hard to spot in a boat going moderately fast.

I've seen tugs and harbor walls where these used tires were used as bumpers. Probably came off a tug or from inside the Port.

Luckily, no damage done to the Brother Nature. Didn't snag onto a downrigger or line.

So I called Michigan City Coast Guard and reported it as a hazard to navigation and gave the GPS coordinates for it. I was out there another couple hours and no Coasty response (or other official type boat such as the Portage Fire Department Boat at the Marina - does it ever leave the dock?). My guess is they put it in the ho-hum file.

My guess is it's still floating out there. Beware.

Thanks for the heads up. Ya, sad they can't even respond to a hazard. ...don't think the tire was the culprit but I must have snagged some underwater debris of some sort. Had a 50 dollar rigged up dypsy (slide diver) with with spin doctor and whole nine yards out. Had it on 10.5 dypsy pole straight out to side, well past the down rigger which was straight out back. The next nearest line was on a board well out to the side. Didn't make any sharp turns or anything and the other lines were all clear when brought in. So, I go to bring in the dypsy and notice there is an unusual bend in the rod. Hmm, pick it up and gave it a slight pull....there it went. Bring it in and have nothing but 6 inches of freyed line....no frickn clue but there went 50 bucks donated to the Lake Michigan Gods! Wth

I keep telling you that K-Mart line isn't that great and you need to change it out every few years!

A few weeks ago I rigged up a meat rig behind a dipsy and clipped it all to the swivel on the end of my wire diver rig. I swung the whole mess over the downrigged lines and out to the side to deploy and the wire line broke at the swivel attachment point. Down to the depths it went. That anger management class I took years ago kicked in and I didn't say one disparaging word to my customers. Inwardly, I was swearing like a sailor!

Lol...sorry, had to laugh. But for the record, it wasn't Kmart line. I use 25lb Big Game and that shit is as tuff as nails! You made it sound much more funny tho! Lol
