I found this flare browsing the Chicago Boat show events and searched it on Amazon.

When my flares expire this is next. It says USCG approved and it fits in a rocket launcher so you can attend to other things. I never had to use a flare but would guess if it's needed you have some other emergencies that need attending to as well.

Scary writings in the review of other failures. Just have to make sure you keep up on the batteries .
At least you could test it to where you really can't the others.
It maybe the way to go along with the flares.

I was reading some reviews on the devise and there are some issues with the twist on and untwist off feature method of activation. Evidently the contacts can be damaged with some over tightening causing no anode contact from battery to devise. Others were comparing the 100 dollar devise to a 10 dollar emergency strobe. Way to pricey for such a simple item. I guess the USCG seal of approval comes with a big price tag. Still up in the air about getting one.
