Great Lakes Salmon Initiative

Is everyone excited about the upcoming fishing season? After years of negative press about the downfall of the salmon fishery in Lake Michigan......You should be excited!!! Why??

Well the GLSI through it's membership, Manufacturer Membership support and working with the MDNR has accomplished a tremendous amount to enhance and insure the future of the Fishery in Michigan waters of Lake Michigan.

Stocking numbers for Chinook salmon proposed for 2018 is increased to 553,000 just a miniscule tick under the goal of 560,000. This speaks to the increasing alewife and smelt population. Recognizing the economic impact importance of the anglers in this state and this fishery that is not Lake Trout driven.

Also the GLSI introduced a Zonal Management perspective to managing our fishery. Looking at habitat, structure, water temps, bait numbers, types of bait and other biological factors among social factors like where angler effort is abundant and species preference or location during different seasons of the year ., the MDNR can more effectively manage the fishery. We can measure and grade as a ANGLER/MDNR TEAM what is effective and be proactive quicker to make changes if needed.

Brown Trout alley. The cost vs return (fish caught or angler success), Browns are extremely expensive based on the amount of fish caught. Moving fish to a concentrated area in the hopes of garnishing a greater return by overwhelming the predator impact like Lake Trout, Walleye, Pike or Cormorants will improve this fishery.

Looking at moving some coho from Platte Bay to other ports for greater angler access and diversity. Michigan plants 78% of the coho in Lake Michigan but only accounts for 16% of the lake wide harvest. Moving a portion of the coho from Platte Bay should insure the southern portion of the lake with the current fantastic spring fishery. Then during the fall return the belief is Michigan angling success will dramatically improve just due to improved access!!
