This site has done terrific job of promoting safety and I would like to add a tool that is often overlooked. A good pair of fishing pliers. After a three way hook up with a walleye a dip net and my index finger I was very happy to have some handy. I was lucky that the hook was a complete passthrough and smashing the barb down allowed me to just back it out. If it would not have went clear through I would have to have cut the shank of the treble or the split ring. This takes some quality pliers. Oh yeah, I had to turn the walleye loose it was over the slot limit.

I did this last spring fishing for the first time in my life. There was no pushing it trough. There is a nice trick that’s works very very well. I will find the video and post the link. As long as you are not by yourself it works well. Your friend must commit to the pull 100 percent.

My captain got too close on an off shore king in the net. Paid the price. Had to have it cut out at the ER room. Got to be careful.

A couple boats were sunk up at Ludington a few years ago when the Indians were putting nets in popular fishing areas when their downrigger cables snagged up and the boats swamped before the wires could be cut. Since then, I have a top quality set of diagonal pliers close at hand at all times. Not the cheapo, rusty ones in the crotch of my needle nose pliers that may or may not chew through the cable when push comes to shove.

They will certainly work on hook removals.
