Hi guys, never used wire for dipsy divers. Im asking what brands and what sizes are used. How are they set up on the reels, and do you need a special rod with different guides to use wire. Thanks for any info.
There are several brands of 7 strand and not enough difference between them to much matter. It comes in shiny " silver" or coffee brown. Again, not enough difference to matter. There is a 19 strand made by Torpedo wire that I started using this year. It seems a bit less likely to turn into a Brillo Pad than the seven strand but it costs a bit more. Since it lasts forever, probably worth the expense.
With 7-strand, you need a special rod (most use roller guide rods) since the wire will cut through the rod guides. I'm not so sure if the 19 strand would be so abrasive. Before you blow $100 or more on a roller guide rod, if using 19 strand, you might run it on an inexpensive rod like a Diawa Wilderness ($20) and keep an eye on the guides. It's not going to cut through in one or two trips, maybe not in a season.
Wire is a solid performer, but this year (knock on wood) so far the fish hook fleas haven't been bad and I've been running wire on one side and 30# braid on the other. Haven't seen much difference in performance. Funny how 30# wire (7-strand) is the norm while the same people perfectly happy with it sacrifice the "skinny" line advantage on their braid divers and spool up with 40 or 50 -pound.
Torpedo wire is 40 pound, I think. Since I didn't spend any time on the shoals this year dragging divers along the bottom with wire line, I don't know if the dive curve for seven strand 30 is identical with 40# nineteen. Since the fleas haven't been bad, I don't know if the Torpedo wire is as resistant to clinging fleas as seven strand. My guess is it isn't.
