BRP Advances Marine Strategy by Focusing on Boats and New Technologies
Company discontinues the manufacturing of outboard engines and agrees with market leader Mercury Marine to support boat packages.

VALCOURT, Quebec, May 27, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- BRP (TSX: DOO; NASDAQ: DOOO) announced today it has re-oriented its marine business by focusing on the growth of its boat brands with new technology and innovative marine products. We will discontinue production of Evinrude E-TEC and E-TEC G2 outboard engines. Our Sturtevant, WI, facility, will be repurposed for new projects to pursue our plan to provide consumers with an unparalleled experience on the water.

We remain committed to our Buy, Build, Transform Marine strategy which has been underway since 2018 with the acquisition of Alumacraft and Manitou boat companies in the U.S., followed by the acquisition of Australian boat manufacturer Telwater in 2019.

“Our outboard engines business has been greatly impacted by COVID-19, obliging us to discontinue production of our outboard motors immediately. This business segment had already been facing some challenges and the impact from the current context has forced our hand,” said José Boisjoli, President and CEO of BRP. “We will concentrate our efforts on new and innovative technologies and on the development of our boat companies, where we continue to see a lot of potential to transform the on-water experience for consumers,” he added.

Discontinuing outboard engine business and signing an agreement with Mercury Marine
Following our decision to discontinue E-TEC and E-TEC G2 outboard engines, we have signed an agreement with market leader Mercury Marine to support boat packages and continue to supply outboard engines to our boat brands.

We will continue to supply customers and our dealer network service parts and will honour our manufacturer limited warranties, plus offer select programs to manage inventory. These decisions will impact 650 employees globally.

Pursuing new opportunities within Build and Transform phases of strategy
With this announcement, BRP will be positioned to expand its presence in the pontoon and aluminum fishing markets through technologically advanced solutions. We will leverage our track record of ingenuity through our R&D resources to enhance the boating experience with unique new marine products, such as the next generation of engine technology with Project Ghost and the next generation of pontoons with Project M, code names for new products we expect to transform the industry.

Maximizing operational and functional efficiencies
Lastly, we will consolidate Alumacraft operations from two sites to one. All Alumacraft operations will be transferred to St Peter, MN and our site in Arkadelphia, AR will be permanently closed. In addition, we want to upgrade the boat production facilities to reorganize manufacturing sites and apply the modularity model used elsewhere. This move is designed to enhance productivity and efficiency and to allow us to respond with even more agility to demand.

Makes a person want to cry if you own one of their engines. They must be financially cowards to flush their customers down the toilet. Why would anyone buy into anything they produce or sell in the future?

If they support parts and warranty’s I think it’s a business decision on there part. I believe they were the last larger two stroker in production. The area of two strokes are over it was a good run.
It's better to ask forgiveness than for permission.

I wonder if they are keeping the G3 line? That was just tooled up in production. They have made this move before and brought back production. If 4 strokes where the problem you would think they could produce good 4 strokes to compete in the market. I hope they keep production of the xd100 oil.

What I read is they are turning their efforts to producing electric powered boats - not just trolling thrusters, electric as the main propulsion.

What I read is they are turning their efforts to producing electric powered boats - not just trolling thrusters, electric as the main propulsion. The other thing of note in the announcement was they aren't selling the Evinrude "name." It's worth multiple millions. Evidently they have a plan for it in the future....

SO FAR WITH A FEW EXCEPTIONS THEY/BRP/EVINRUDE  HAVE BEEN SUPORTING THEIR CUSTOMERS WEL!. . WARRANTY AND PARTS . A LOT OF THE PARTS ON THE NEWER E-TEC MACHINES ESPECIALLY THE G-2 vershions have common applications on thier snowmobile and power sports machines .These machines have consistently sold well and are selling well insuring the availability of parts .
  Actually there is also a growing demand for these motors there is just nothing that make power and torque quite like them. We often get calls for old new stock from some verry far away places i would have never expected .
 If you have one take good care of it . Feed it only fresh gas! Dont let any one touch it with out the extensive trainingand experience  needed to understand the machine and how it works. The few comercial customers that we have had in the past that where fully aclimated to the e-tec technology that where forced to repower. Are unanamous "I WISH I HAD MY ETECH BACK" especially the ones with the last vershion of G-2 models they made.   hope this hgelps some of my customers feel better about there Evinrude purchase from us at calumet marine THEIR BUSINES IS GREATLY APPRECIATED . WE TOO DID NOT LIKE THE NEWS NO MORE EVINRUDES HAVE BEEN A DEALER SINCE 1957   .   FILL THE BOX BOYS

My G2 150 hp has got 83 1/2 hours on it now. Maybe a good time to replace it with a new Honda or a new Suzuki. Maybe step up the horsepower to 175 or even 200.

I imagine that 19' Searunner would fly with a 200, what are you getting for top speed with the 150 ?
