We attended the MUCC convention this weekend in Sault St. Marie to advocate for our optional license proposal to use extra rods when trolling the Great Lakes. Some MUCC members put forth a resolution to oppose this license. We provided an information sheet for the delegates. Our Secretary and President addressed the convention during the debate on the resolution. We have found that when people understand all the details and benefits of our proposal, like reducing cormorant populations on the Great Lakes, they like it. It will help anglers have more enjoyable and productive trips on the Great Lakes. We are pleased to report the proposal to oppose our license was not passed by the delegates.

We would like to thank Amy Trotter and Justin Tomei from MUCC who helped us navigate the convention process. We were well prepared as a result. It was interesting to watch the debate on 19 policy resolutions at the convention. MUCC has a long history of fighting for hunters and anglers in Michigan. They do lots of good for conservation and their membership drive is underway so check them out:  mucc.org/

We are continuing to gather support for the trolling license. We will be working with the DNR, NRC and State Legislators over the coming months. We will probably see this on the NRC agenda and legislative calendars in late summer. We will need lots of support with phone calls and emails at that time. We will keep you posted with information on that.

The GLSI 2024 membership campaign is underway. If you would like to see an optional trolling license in 2025, your financial support is very helpful to provide the resources to push this license over the finish line. You can join us here:  glsalmon.org/
