So asking for a little help. I have a Icom 604 marine radio that has been flawless for many years. I have a shakespear 5225 8ft antenna. This year I can not transmit. All other functions are working as they should. I suspect that my antenna for what ever reason has gone bad. I have checked and rechecked all connections. Still the same. Anyone havve a meter to do a antenna output check???

I would be surprised if it were the antenna, but it could be Ed.  usually its the connection, or the lead wiring into the anenna.  If there is no visual damage you can assess, I would tend to suspect the transmitter in the radio itself.  Easiest way to diagnose is to find another radio, barrowed, used, perhaps even purchased with the intent of taking back if not needed.  I dont know anyone with a meter but I am sure someone has one.

update; found that my mic was bad not the antenna. I have never had to replace a mic or a antenna before because they were faulty. tried my antenna on another boat no problem. Tired my radio that way and couldn't get out. Replaced my mic and  radio is in service again.

I have been reading up on both items and was surprised on what I read about antennas going bad. Didn't realize that they are considered having a shelf life of around 10years. UV and other items can over time break them down. My icom has serviced me well with this boat and the smaller one I had. Was swapping the radio between boats and I guess the mic got beat up some. All good now!
