News from Indiana and Save the Date
The Indiana Lake Michigan Fisheries Workshop, sponsored by the GLSI, will be March 7th at the
Izaak Walton League, Miller Chapter
in Portage Indiana. More information to share as the time gets closer.
The Mixsawbah hatchery is making some improvements. The project has not been completed in whole. They are adding an additional inside tank. The King salmon fingerlings will have more room to roam with this addition. As the young Kings grow the expanded room will allow for all fish to get on food easier and if medications are needed this will help there also.
The Bodine Hatchery will be spawning Skamania during the month of January. Anyone interested in seeing the spawning of these great fish will need to reach out and make a call to Alexander, the manager for Bodine. We had the chance to observe our hatchery folks working these fish last winter. It is something to see!
Indiana leads all the Great Lakes states with their Skamania program and the Indiana fish are caught all over Lake Michigan.
Ben Dickinson, the Indiana Lake Michigan biologist, may have a new assistant soon. There were a number of people that have applied for the assistant position. This position has been vacant since last spring. We are glad to see this position being filled so critical work to support our fishery can be maintained.
The fish cleaning station for the Portage Marina will have a grand opening this spring.
Happy New Year!
