As soon as we crossed the border at International Falls to go into Fort Frances I lost all phone service. Up on the lake we did not have even a radio to listen to. We had to talk to a border crossing guard to find out if the U.S. was at war yet with the Nokos when we came back through. During 9/11 I was without communications as I was elk hunting on a mountain in Colorado. We then found out our world changed dramatically when we came down the mountain 2 days after the fact.
