Since the salmon fishing has been slow in the region, a buddy and I decided to go up to Michigan to chase the kings and the Manistee River did not disappoint! These were caught below Tippy damn on the Manistee River. The river was loaded with thousands upon thousands of Kings. Lots of brown trout too. Great time and a beautiful area.

Just beads! My buddy and I hired a guide and we were slaying them compared to every one else who was throwing anything and everything else. I could not believe how simple the rig was. For the kings, we used a 1oz pencil weight on a swivel above a barrel swivel with a length of line (1-3ft) below the barrel. Thread a bead on there and tie a hook. Tie another length of line (3' or so) from that hook to another hook, using either another bead or some times a stone fly.

When we were fishing for steelhead, which we only got one because they were still sparse, its basically the same thing except the lengths of line is shorter (1-2') and the weight becomes an inline 1/2oz weight give or take and add a float. That rig was really good for catching trout too.

Funny part is that it costs maybe $0.35 to make the rigs we were using, and add a dollar if using a fly too.
