My family kicks off game bird hunting season every year on the Sunday following Thanksgiving. We put aside the deer hunting stuff and I get out my Ideal 300, load up the crew and hounds and we go the public fish and wildlife area at Washington, IN, Glendale F.W. Area. The hunt is a put and take affair but it is very well run and the hunting and the pheasants are top notch. Four hunters took 8 birds in under 2 hours. It is a hunt as the birds were scattered and in a lot of cover and in the woods. You need good dogs,

My oldest son Dan brought his 7 month old Golden Retriever, Chip, on its first hunt. He got the dog from a breeder in Crown Point. The dog worked well and flushed the first four birds and retrieved the last one. Dan was beaming. The last 4 birds belonged to my pointer Belle. She has a good nose and found birds missed by other hunters and their dogs. She is 11 plus in age and past her prime but she can still do her job.

Nice job Don,

Wish my legs would allow me to still do it. There is nothing like having a good dog and birds to shoot. :)

That is awesome. If I wasn't chasing deer so much I would have started earlier. I have my 3 deer for the freezer now. I am going to get out after the birds when I can. Did your shorthair do well?

I hate that for you Ed. You are right, you cannot help but smile when you see your dog bringing a downed bird to you after a long point.
