Hopefully hit Cal River tomorrow to search for these delicious fish. Heard some been being caught. Slightly early but they will show up any day now.

Be safe out there

Hit the flats off Gary the other day just to check, few gobies, some marks on graph, buddy maybe had one perch bite. About 5 other boats from 50-60 fow. Water temp was 52 at surface if I remember correctly. Not happening as of Saturday out there.

Not perch, but had a good fish fry for the family off these last week. Picked up a couple more today. Was a little disappointed I couldn’t get out for perch on the boat, but maybe it was for the better. Small pieces of uncured skein on the bottom has been getting the whites. Have seen a couple small perch and a couple keepers caught from shore in the last couple of weeks.

Generally, Michigan City and Portage Lakefront are the best/most popular spots, although I suspect any area with deep water and structure (Hammond, East Chicago come to mind) will hold whitefish this time of year

I think there’s probably more around than we think. I have seen them caught by guys fishing for coho and perch at EC and out by the hole in the wall. I’ve also personally caught them at Gary light fishing for browns at night up in the discharge. I also have seen them caught jigging for lakers off the port. The reason I think there’s more than most people realize is that they are finicky biters. Most guys I see trying from shore are using bad bait and poor rigging. I’ve caught some big whites that had gobies and shiners in their bellies, but most of them this time of year are loaded with laker eggs. With as many lakers as we have spawning around Hammond/Cal Park, the ship canal, and Portage I can’t believe there’s not whites in there with them.

Late reply but went to the first turnaround basin  and Crowley’s area in the river Saturday and to the deep flats Sunday. Between LUND and I, we got four keepers in the river, one dink. No perch at all on Sunday. Seeing other reports seems it’s still very slow. Have a happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Three river trips for me in the last 10 days and very few perch. Feel I am marking perch but no interest in biting. Bottom bouncers with fatheads have produced zero. All keeper perch have been on jig and plastic tipped with minnow or slip bobber with jig tipped with minnow. Water temps were mid 40s today
