Steelies are easy to tell because of their completely white mouths, square tail (salmon are forked tails) and spots on the whole tail.

When it comes to kings there is nothing like the smell of the film they leave on your hands/boat/fishing net/etc. When you start recognizing that smell, you'll know you have a king every time.

Speed was between 2.7-3.1 mph (GPS speed over ground) on the fish finder.

Thanks for the info on the fish and the speed. I only have GPS speed so that works great for me. Hopefully can get s a few nice fishing over the weekend.

Whaler is right. Kings have the "smell." They have distinctive tail spots, gums etc., but the definitive between king and coho is their anal fin, the one on the bottom between their pooper and tail. Fan it out. A coho is almost an equilateral triangle -almost as tall as long. A king is decidedly not an e-triangle. The anal fin where it attaches to the fish-belly is at least twice as long as it is tall.

In the photo, you are gripping the anal fin so I can't say. Loss of scales makes me believe you have a coho. In fact, if it breaks the 10 pound mark you caught the rare and elusive: MEGAHO

Way to go!
