Well you guys finally turned me into an offshore bigpond fisherman. We all know the cost of offshore fishing. When I got my boat last year and fished my 1st season on the lake it was disaster. I was taking people for boat rides and getting people sea sick. I finished the season thinking what the hell did I do spending all that money! Well after much reading on these forums and on the net, another 500 in gear, and a complete re- rig following every detail and bingo! The devil does reside in the details, once I got the details right the fish followed.

You going to be in the southend tournament tomorrow!!! With fish like that you have a very good chance on winning.
Hope to see you there. Steve

Nice Work Steelhead. As a pretty new Salmon fisher myself I can say that hard work does pay off and you are right about devil in the details. A few MPH or 10 FoW off can be the difference between a skunk and a great day!!

Where did you pick up the fish at and what was the hot baits?

I put out 6 poles.
- Been running 2 Boards with peanut flies and dodgers with approx. 1 -2 ounces of keel weight. I was having my best luck with black, green, gold, and silver. Any mix of those colors. 18" fluorocarbon leader behind that dodger to the fly. This was working better mid June to mid July. They have been ineffective lately because the fish are deeper. I just swapped these out to pencil baits and I will add more weight. this was a Coho killer in June
- I run 2 size 0 Dipsy's with Echip Flashers & Howie Flies. the greens, silvers, and that iridescent strand (the name escapes me) have worked best These poles have stayed active I just let them out a good 100 plus feet to get them deeper lately.
- last and most effective have been my downriggers, I run clean spoons on both downriggers Steelhead Candy, Lemon Ice, orange and red spoons. Running Sliders is extremely effective. If I caught 50 fish this year 30 are off the down riggers and 20 hit the sliders.
Notes
-The fluorocarbon leaders the proper length for the fly action is key. I run it along side the boat to see how it reacts at different speeds.
- I have been scenting everything with Mikes gel. Not sure how much this helps but it was part of my change in the details. So when it aint broke don't fix it.
