Some trolling spoons don't come with split rings out of the package, others do. Curious to know if people add split rings to the ones that don't come with them or not.

On spoon rods, I just use snap swivel tied on the the line and then attached to the spoons. I didn't notice a ton of difference in action between using a split ring or not when just holding the setups in the water at troll speed and comparing.

I have tried adding them, and pulling them off. I have settled on using it how the spoon was supplied. If it has a split ring, use it. If it doesnt, dont. Each Mfg probably feels their spoons run better with or without, and thats why they are included or not..........or at least thats what my gut tells me. :)

That's how I figured it to be. Do you still attach the line to the spoon using a snap swivel in either situation?

In bass fishing, some guys get spazzy about using snap swivels to attach lures to the main line and insist on using a small barrel swivel, then a foot or two of leader line tied direct to the lure...

Either way, there has to be a good quality swivel in the mix somewhere, or line twist gets out of control. Use a crappy swivel one time and have fun unraveling the last 20 ft of line going back on the reel!

use a good swivel at the end of your line to then attach the spoon or lure to. This makes it easy to change out also.

I also leave them how they came originally. I do recommend good coast lock snap swivels. Not the huge one either. Smaller ones with a high lb test like Spro or Sampo will let the spoon move better in the water.

Exactly what I've been using. They work great and have a high test rating. Better than the 20lb Mono I'm using for main line anyways!

Do you guys use snap swivels when attaching to body baits as well?

I prefer to tie direct with a Rapala knot but for salmon fishing I've resigned to just use small snaps. No swivel.

I personally use the small high test spro snap swivels for everything. Dont really need them for body baits but I am ocd so everything is the same :)

Using swivels on plugs can contribute to a plug rolling much easier. Generally not recommended by anyone.

If it spins use a swivel. If it wobbles use a snap.
