What's better to use a release clip or rubber bands? Seen both used any advantages one way or the other

Everybody has their preference. I would say, try some methods out and see what you like best. I like releases due to their ease of use. I use chamberlains and like their adjustability. I know other guys who will only use rubber bands.

Like Jeff said it’s personal preference I use blacks releases. Guys also use the vision padded releases too. I personally would use one of the three types over rubber bands. But hey each is there own.

I used to use the pinch pad releases, but switched to the Chamberlain releases last year. I like that you can adjust the rod to release and release to lure tensions independently. I can set the rod to release tension pretty high so the rods can be loaded up pretty heavy in the holder without popping the release, but the release to lure tension can be set light enough that it will release in the event of a small fish or perch getting hooked up.

I use the bottom tracking feature on my Cannon downriggers sometimes, so the rod to release tension has to be set high enough that line can be stripped from the reel without tripping the release when the downrigger drops down automatically.

I've used them all and prefer #16 rubber bands to all the rest. Simple and effective (and cheap). I've probably spent less on rubber bands in the last 40 years than what it costs to outfit 4 riggers. They work on mono and braid. They work with tiny spoons and big ol' paddles. I can usually spot a shaker immediately. Very seldom get false releases. Oh, did I mention they (and me) are cheap. Just bought a pound of them for $8.00. I'm good through 2021.

Also, I find many other uses for rubber bands on the boat.

X2 on #16 rubber bands. From shakers to big fish they are great.
