Well, the inevitable has happened: The aluminum in-hull fuel tank in the 170 ProLine center console is leaking gas into the bilge. With the outboard, fumes aren't quite as much an issue as an inboard might be, but it's still a mess and waste of fuel.

Replacement is going to be costly and will require cutting a big hole in the deck so it's beyond a DIY project if I want it to turn out pretty. Has anyone had this done locally? Any idea on cost? I'm guessing $1,800-$2,500.

Or, any recommendations for a topside fuel tank that could be integrated into the layout? Deck space is precious. I found one online that looks like I could put under the cooler ahead of the console, but wondered if anyone has encountered this issue and found a workable solution.

When you have it done look at your stringers to see if the bottom drain on each stringer is open. My last boat a 20 ft was purchased new in 1989, the stringers were wood and fiber glassed. On 2 stringers on the port side the drain (cutout of about 1 inch by 2 inches) on the bottom of both stringers were fiber glassed over, not allowing drainage to the center of the boat and to the bilge. A leak in the tank or fuel line would not have allowed the gasoline to drain to the bilge. The flooring and stringers were replaced in 2009 and that is when the issue on the 2 stringers on the port side was discovered.
Also based on info from Boat USA I would replace all of the fuel lines (recommend 10 years)
Also look to see if the leak was caused by corrosion.
Make sure you install a reliable level gauge or allowances in the floor to replace at a later date

Can you give more info. Is the floor Fiberglas, aluminum , or wood?
I have a buddy who builds custom alum fuel tanks for street rods.
I'm sure he can build you something or repair your leaky one if you can get it out.
His shop is at home and his rates are very reasonable. He is a boat guy too.
His allum welding is the best I've seen around here.

Are you sure it's the tank and not just the sending unit or a line?
