I’ve dialed back my pursuits this year with a new house and a newer job cutting into my time. But with the cool temps, recent showers, and favorable winds combined with a midweek day off, I had to sieze the opportunities to chase these elusive fall spawners. Monday night I drive up after work and was fortunate enough to run into Blackjaw from the site. We caught up while the sun dropped behind us and both lucky enough to tie into fish. Jason’s only lasted a few seconds, but contact is still nice. I was lucky enough to come tight to a fish of my own 15 minutes later. A mid teens dark male that hit a crankbait made its way to my net a few minutes later. Despite covering a lot of ground and water that was my only bite for the night. Last night I decided to try my luck again and made my way out to the social hotspot of the harbor to cast away with the regular crew. I know the south side of Chicago is a scary place for a lot of people, but I can honestly say the crew of regulars that fishes out there are probably to nicest most respectful fishermen I’ve ever met. There’s plenty of good natured trash talking going on all the time, but everyone helps each other out and everyone shares. There is always room for another fishermen on the point, and when someone hooks up, everyone stops casting and clears their lines to make room for the fish. I was lucky enough to hook up twice. The first is this 10lb male. The second was lost to a failed snap, for which I was given a ton of stick. I’m not usually one to sell out shore spots, but I think everyone should give the Jackson Park fall run a shot. There’s a lot to be learned from getting out of the comfort zone and it’s a lot of fun.
