Hey everyone,
New guy to the site use to do a lot of salmon fishing as a kid with my father. After many years of saving my pennies I just bought my own 2016 Alumacraft competitor 175 but am in need of all Salmon gear as I'm only starting with my pan fish set ups. I'm in search of decently priced Line counter reels, trolling rods, down riggers, also would be interested if anyone is selling any kind of tackle lots!

Thanks,
James

I would jump on this. Everything you need at a significant discount. Quite a nice set of tackle.

I agree it is a great deal but unfortunately I need to focus my spending habits on rods, reels, riggers and such. Our old riggers were sold when pops sold the boat, he still uses his rods and reels but he mostly saltwater fishes now so he's handed down quite a bit of salmon tackle to me though I could definitely use more but I have enough to get started in that category. I appreciate the offer and if he decides to break some of it apart I would def be interested or if a group wants to get a pot together and split the tackle I may be in for that as well. Just don't have a $1,000 to drop solely on tackle at the moment.

I have much more "stuff" than that which helps me realize I (you) don't really need that much stuff. Don't know how your boat is set up but for now, you should be thinking "spring" and how to get in the game come springtime.

Full disclosure, I'm biased. You should be getting set up with a planer & mast system for the boat. Don't invest a fortune in yellow birds or other in-line planers. Once you make the committment for big boards, you'll never go back. Once you spend $100 - $200 on in-lines you'll be stuck with them. So sad.

Besides, with basic tools, you can build your own P&M system for about $50, catch fish and have more fun.

You will probably max out at 3 peeps on a 17 footer so nine rods. Two should be line counter, the others don't have to be line counters. Plenty of choices and if you can get a bargain on used, yee-haa! Otherwise, Cabelas sells line counter reels that work really well (I use them and I fish way more than most). Plus, they put them on sale a couple times each year.

Lures? Get a half dozen Red Arties, three or four J-9 GFR Rapalas, a half dozen F. Red 6-inch dodgers and some blue green, gold small flies and you are well equipped. Throw in a couple Fire-Tiger plugs just for variety.

That will get you through March/April and early May. The nearshore stuff. And with a 17 footer, your days offshore when the fish go to deep water will be limited. It's a bit early to be investing in 5, 7 and 10 color 'cores, meat-rigs, copper line set-ups, wire divers and all that.

Thanks for the input BNature I will def look into the tackle you suggested and totally agree I don't need all that! I have bags of walleye and bass tackle and only use the same half dozen lures every year haha! Knowing my limits with only a 17' I want to keep it simple. The set up I was thinking in my head was 2 down riggers off the back ( there is a guy who makes billet clamps for my Alumatrak system so I wont have to drill and make them stationary), some trees on the side (probably take Willie's idea with the 1 1/4" galvanized pipe and build my own) for planers and dipsys and my regular rod mounts for flatlines. But yea I just wanted to use this to kinda brain storm ideas of how ya'll set up smaller boats, what rigs work that way I can be ready for spring...... And of course if anyone has a good deal on some tackle I'm interested :)

My current set up is pretty much a blank canvas I got her pretty late this year (end of July) so I've mostly just been smallie and perch, and walleye fishing.

It's late in the year and I don't have many available dates from now to the end of season (early October for me) or I'd give you the "spiel" about taking a morning charter with me (or some other small-boat captain) and get the idea of how to set up your boat and some hands-on training. Though we are fishing kings, the places and tactics are darned close to the ones we'd be using in spring. Before you start spending a lot of money, and drilling holes, you'd do well to take a look, up close and personal at some well-set-up rigs. I'm only an hour north of Lafayette (get off at the dairy and you are in my neighborhood). If you'd like to stop by sometime just to look at the Bro, take some photos and the like, feel free. Nice gesture mike, that's something to consider taking right there! Biggest thing is start small then work your way up. There are a ton of different rigs out there and ways to catch fish to become over whelmed. Pretty soon you will have what some say an addiction plus 25 rods, copper, lead core, wire divers, meat rigs, box's full of un used spoons, flashers and everything else. I probably use 15% of what I own or maybe even less. A team and b team see most soak time.

Mike that is very nice of you! I may take you up on that sooner rather than later when I get some days off work and the schedule isn't crazy! I'll shoot you an e-mail when I can get some dates! Also, this site is really cool and everyone seems really nice already having people contact me with nice rods for cheaper than I'd pay in stores and willing to let me come check out their rigs! You all rule!

James
