The one thing I have learned about LM fishing is that you can never have enough rod setups and it seems to inconveniently empty your check book lol

Sesshoku: I don't use leadcore at all in the spring. The fish are right at the surface. I've had days when the only difference in my rig and my neighbors was they rigged with a 1/2 ounce weight and my lures (same lures). Same area, we whacked and stacked, they nearly skunked. My point is until I start heading offshore in May, my lead lines stay home.

Sure, you will catch a fish or two somedays with a 3 or 4 color. With a limited spread in a small boat, you can't "afford" to have "maybe" rods at work. Maybe if you put a mag spoon down at 25 feet you'll hook a big brown. Maybe, if you try a big dodger and fly, it will work, maybe this, maybe that. Sure they will occasionally work. Day-in, day out, you'd be better off sticking with tried and true lures and tactics.

I never run Lead or long lines during spring coho on weekends. Too many boats in a small area. One wrong move by someone and 3 others have to adjust and you're in the middle of a mess. Maybe an SWR during the week but weekday fishing hasn't happened much in the past couple of years.

Thank you for more great advice. I've been fishing for Sping coho on a charter and with a friend who is now offering charters. Now that I think about it, after reading the last couple of posts, I remember their tactics being very similar to what you guys described. They did have lines out that landed the occasional king, but with my setup, I can't see running more than two people and 4-6 lines until I reall get the swing of things. , So, I like the advice of going with the tried and true.

I did respool the lead core I had on one of my reels then put it away for a future setup. So with having two 2-color setups, I guess I'll just have to ask Santa to help me come up with four new rigs instead of two to be ready for Spring.

Others may disagree with this but if Santa's elfs are too busy to get you hooked up for spring fishing and you have some bass rods and reels just throw like 30' of fluorocarbon an them and use that. Not like you need heavy duty equipment to get spring Coho - they are pretty small. Also I had my first king strike spring last year on a bass rod/reel that I just decided to throw out a stick bait on (had my bass braid on it and everything). Only reason that was not my first King was 1) I let my son fight him in 2) we lost him at the boat due to inexperience. My point is for spring I think you can get away with gear not necessarily made for trolling/Salmon if funds do not come through for you. Also watch for the Tinley Park Fishing show in February I believe it is. you may be able to get some deals there on rods and reels (that is where I got some of my planar rods).

There are also others on the board that have items for sale. Rods, reels, anything you might need at prices far less then you normally would have to spend. Check with Raven I know he has alot of items for sale.

very true on this, I caught 2 king last week on a st. croix 7'0 ML bass rod with 10 lbs test on a Storm fire tiger. toog about 30 minutes to keep the drag from breaking but we got him in! I wouldn't advise making a habit out of it considering thats why I made this post

Skis?

I think he is talking about the large planar board with the front Mass you need for them - I could be wrong but that is my guess
