I use 2 amish outffiters bags (best on market my opinion and many others) they can slow my 27' down to 1.5 if I really wanted to. They also help keep your boat more stable when fishing in rougher water. I needed them as I can only get down to 3.4 ish without any bags.

Jums: Dont' know how old you are but if you want some reels that will stand the test of time, look into some Penn 9Ms. They'll stand up to any fish in the Great Lakes. The later models (black plastic ends) have new-age drag washers that are very smooth. The older ones, maroon plastic sides, need to have the replacement drag washers installed.

They also need to have a new "Pawl" installed every five or 10 years to make the levelwind mechaniism work perfectly. Easy job and there are a zillion places on the 'net to buy Penn reel parts. They've been around for years. I think Pennsylvania was named after the reel company.

Look 'em up on eBay and you can buy them at significant bargain. Just checked ebay $35 to $65.

I have and use about a dozen of them. Some of these date back to the early 1980s and few of them were purchased new.

Just saw Cabela's has Diawa Sealine x Trolling combos on sale for 74.99 which is over 50% off regular price (no idea if they are any good or not). Also they have Depthmaster Metal trolling combo for 114.98 (regular price is 174.98). I have the non-metal depth master reels and so far they have been fine so these should be even better. Check out the bargain cave, they have a few other reels and rods for sale.

Since getting ready for Spring was mentioned in this thread, and I am currently attempting to do that, I'll chime in with a question. Let's say I have 4-6 rods and no down riggers on my 17.5' boat and am planning to stay in close. I plan to set up for a pair of dipsey divers and at least one pair with lead core. My question is how much lead core should I go with?

I've read that I should use anything from 2 color to 5 color for what I'm attempting to do. I plan to buy more rods by Spring, but right now I have four. My thought was to set up two with 3 color then run divers on the other two. Is this plan advisable for ice out to mid Spring or until I get more rods for different setups? I really can't see me needing a full 10 color setup right away, and I'm even wondering if a 7 color would be too much for now.

Near shore in spring for coho you could do 2 dipsies and even go with flat lines or flat lines with keel weights. probably be easier to manage than using lead. If you do use lead maybe a 2 color and 3 color. No need to get real deep.

I have two ten footers of the diawa sealine combos from Cabelas I bought last year for 100 bucks each n they work awesome I use them as my dipsey rods so far they r pretty good to me atleast

I can't answer the lead question but spring I run 2 or 4 Dipsy's and run 2 or 4 planar boards with Thin Fish and around a 5/8 keel weight. in front. I also tend to run a long flat line out the center with a stick bait in case there is a king trolling around

Since I'm stuck at home, not currently fishing, I figured I'd rig some stuff up. So now I have two 2 color rigs and a dipsey rig setup. Trying to decide what to do with the fourth rod since I pulled 4 colors off of it to string up the 2 color rigs. I might just respool the 6 colors of lead core and put it back in the tackle box. Then rig another dipsey setup and go shopping for a couple more rods for flat line/keel weight rigs.
